How to Create a Reclaimed Brick Path?
So how do you make a reclaimed brick path that looks like it came straight out of a fairy tale?
1) Prepare Your Foundation
First things first, before you do anything else you need to prepare the space for your path and clear out the area. To make sure your garden path is as flat and seamless, proper preparation is needed.
If you want your path to be level with the ground around it, you’ll have to dig down. The foundation of your walkway should be slightly deeper than the height of your bricks to account for the mortar or grout you’ll be using to stick the bricks together.
Flatten everything down to achieve an even foundation. For areas that aren’t perfectly level you can use sand to ensure you have a completely level path.
2) Decide on Your Pattern
Once you have your foundation, it’s time to get creative. There are numerous different patterns you can use for your brick path. Classic flat pattern, basket weave, herringbone… The options are truly countless!
Place a few bricks down and experiment until you find a pattern that you’re happy with.
3) Lay Your Bricks
When you’re happy with your pattern you can try laying down all your bricks to get an idea of how the finished product will look. We would always recommend doing this before securing your paving in place. This is to make sure you have enough bricks to cover your area and that there aren’t any awkward gaps.
4) Secure Everything in Place
There are different ways you can secure your reclaimed brick path.
The easiest, and the one we’d recommend, is brushing paving sand over the bricks to fill any gaps. This method will take a few days as the sand needs to settle in the cracks.
To help the process you can use a watering can or a hose to get the sand wet.
Even though you’re not using mortar or any other material to ‘glue’ the bricks together, you can rest assured that your path will be able to withstand heavy foot traffic.
5) Enjoy Your New Path
