HOW TO MAKE A UNIQUE AND CHARACTERISTIC GARDEN PLANTER FROM RECLAIMED BRICK

May 24th, 2014

Let’s introduce the effectiveness of reclaimed bricks, when it comes to turning a garden or even an interior into an eye-catching and aesthetically unique visual delight. A garden planter made from reclaimed bricks can particularly stand out.

It’s difficult to capture that natural, weathered ambience achieved by the many variations of brick we supply here at Cawarden. As such, we’ve created some tips on putting the bricks to use and getting that garden looking great.

Garden Planter: A Stacking Start

Firstly, stack your bricks and build the shape of your planter, by popping the bricks on top of each other. This will allow you to experiment, see what works and what doesn’t and find a suitable location. Once completed, remove the test build carefully, placing the bricks in order so you may memorise it as you attach them.

Mortariffic

You’ll need some good mortar to get the garden planter to hold together. Mix an adequate amount until it is spreadable, but retains a degree of thickness; think ice cream, not slushy.

Mortar can stain the area around it, if spilt it can be a pain to remove. So, lay down a plastic cover to keep your surrounding concrete safe.

Lay Low

Now it’s time to start building. Begin by laying the bottom layer of bricks, applying about an inch of mortar to the sides. Stick to the style you’ve chosen and place the bricks carefully to match your desired design. Continue adding layers, pressing each brick firmly into place while applying mortar between them for stability.

Caps Your Lot

Brick capping can transform an ordinary garden planter, giving it a distinctive and polished look—especially when you choose the right bricks.

Apply your final layer with this extra capping layer in mind, and you’re done! Leave the mortar to set, and when you come back, carefully clean the brick down with a wire brush taking off any protruding, excess mortar. You’ll want to leave it to properly set before you add in the soil and plants, but there you have it; four easy steps to a great-looking reclaimed brick garden planer for your garden!
