CLEANING BRICK SLIPS

Cleaning brick slips in the right way is no secret and there’s no need to go and purchase expensive cleaning products. Due to the surface texture, weathering, and foot traffic amongst other reasons, brick slip walls can get dirty over time, particularly if you use brick slips outside.

The good news is cleaning brick slips is easy and trouble-free. This method has been used for many years and dates to Victorian times. The old ways are generally the best ways and sometimes a lost art.

HOW TO CLEAN BRICK SLIPS?

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

  • Washing up liquid or other non-bleach, non-abrasive cleaner
  • Wire brush
  • Bucket
  • Salt
  • Sponge, cloth or rag
  • A Vacuum cleaner
  • Duster

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE:

1. Make sure the brick slip wall has been vacuumed and then dusted with a slightly damp cloth. This will remove loose dust and debris that will have collected on the surface.

2. Mix 1 part mild detergent or washing-up liquid and 1 part table salt. Mix with water making sure you form a consistent malleable paste.

3. Apply the cleaning solution using a sponge or cloth. Scrub the wall lightly with a wire brush and allow the solution to settle in for 15 minutes.

4. Finally, wipe off the cleaning solution using a slightly wet sponge or a cloth. Make sure you rinse the sponge or the cloth regularly in a bucket of warm water.

5. Step back and check that you have removed all of the cleaning solutions. When the wall is dry and you notice residue left by the cleaning solution then use a scrubbing brush or a cloth to rinse the area.

ADDITIONAL AFTERCARE INFORMATION

If the brick slip wall or surface is in a high-traffic area or an area that can get dirty quickly, like a kitchen splashback. It may be worth considering sealing the surface of the brick slips after they are cleaned. There are many great sealants on the market and they usually come in a matt or gloss finish. For cast brick slips then use a matt or gloss cement sealant.

Matt finish sealants will protect and seal the surface with little to no effect on the colour of the brick slips.

Gloss finish sealants will protect and seal the surface but will add a sheen to the surface giving the slips a ‘wet look’ finish.
