FAQs

  • What are reclaimed bricks?

Reclaimed bricks are bricks that have previously been used in old buildings and structures. These salvaged bricks are removed, cleaned and reused in restoration or renovation projects, new constructions or house extensions.

  • Are reclaimed bricks structurally sound?

Yes, all our bricks are durable and structurally sound. We personally reclaim our bricks so each old brick is graded and quality checked; we choose only the best. Cawarden can provide compressive strength data upon request contact us for more information.

  • What are the benefits of using reclaimed bricks?

The benefits of using reclaimed bricks are:

    • Environmentally friendly as it reduces waste and carbon footprint.
    • Unique weathered character – you just cannot achieve with new bricks.
    • More durable as they have already withstood the test of time and lasted 100+ years. Old bricks were made using a much denser clay and fired to a higher temperature in a wood fired kiln.
    • Brick matching – Using old bricks salvaged from your local area are perfect if you need to match to existing brickwork. If you have a period property you are more likely to meet the requirements of the planning and conservation officer which is virtually impossible to meet with new bricks.
  • Where do reclaimed bricks come from?

Reclaimed bricks are salvaged from deconstructed or demolished buildings such as schools, factories, hospitals, public buildings and houses.

  • Can reclaimed bricks be used for structural work?

Yes, as each reclaimed brick goes through strict processes to ensure their suitability for modern day use and load bearing. Cawarden can provide compressive strength data upon request. Contact us for more information.

  • What are common uses for reclaimed bricks?

    The main uses are:

    • Restoration of old brickwork i.e. replacing damaged bricks.
    • Extending Victorian, Edwardian and Georgian properties – by using original salvaged bricks it will keep the extension traditional looking and within keeping to the existing property.
    • Exterior walls, garden landscaping and facades – using reclaimed bricks that match your original brickwork will create a seamless look.
    • Create feature walls, chimney and fireplace internals to add character to the aesthetic look inside the property.
  • Are reclaimed bricks available in different colours and styles?

Yes. With over 1.5 million reclaimed bricks in stock we have a range of colours, textures and sizes to choose from. The brick colour depends on the below factors:

    • Origin
    • Age
    • Clay colour
    • Manufacturing methods used – such as wirecut, pressed and handmade
    • The firing process – if fired in a wood, gas or coal kiln
    • Weathering and aging overtime
    • Unique finish

If you are looking for a particular type and colour brick, contact us or use our online brick matching service to find the right one for you.

  • How are reclaimed bricks cleaned and prepared for reuse?

Each recycled brick is processed by hand in our yard. The process is:

    • Washed to remove old mortar
    • Quality checked for damage
    • Left to air dry

By following this process it sustains the original look and patina.

  • Do reclaimed bricks require special installation techniques?

No. special installation techniques are not required; just treat and install them like a normal new house brick.

  • How can I tell if reclaimed bricks are right for my project?

Reclaimed bricks are suitable for the majority of projects. They are often used to match brickwork on existing properties to enhance the overall look of the extension/ renovation. The second hand bricks are ecofriendly reducing environmental impact, unique in colour and texture to add character to your building or wall.

  • Do reclaimed bricks have certifications or standards?

Certification is available upon request – The governing body we use is NSCA. The testing process would be a moisture test and a progressive strength test. The old bricks will be sent off for testing at a cost to the customer. A certificate will be provided upon competition. Please contact us for more information.

  • Can reclaimed bricks be used indoors?

Yes, they are extremely popular for indoor use due to their own unique character and charm. Accent walls, backsplashes in kitchens, fireplace features or rustic flooring are what most customers use for second hand bricks. Some of the reasons customers choose to use reclaimed bricks rather than new bricks are:

    • Ecofriendly as they are reused rather than purchasing new
    • Strong and durable
    • Unique character you cannot achieve with new bricks
  • How do I maintain reclaimed brickwork?

Reclaimed bricks do not require maintenance although some customers choose to seal them with a sealer. By sealing the second hand bricks this can help with water resistance, especially in wet or particularly cold climates. If you choose to do this, we advise to use a breathable sealer, we can provide you with a list of recommended sealers please contact us for more information.

  • Can reclaimed bricks be used for exterior walls or garden projects?

Yes. Reclaimed bricks can be used for outdoor projects such as garden walls, patios, paths, potting sheds, greenhouses and exterior buildings as they were made with much denser clay making them frost resistant.
