WHAT ARE BRICK SLIPS?
So what are brick slips?
Put simply, brick slips are thin sections of brick that can be applied retroactively to a surface to offer the appearance or practical benefits of exposed bricks. The two most common examples of this are with internal, feature walls or external for extra insulation and a traditional appearance.
HOW ARE BRICK SLIPS MADE?
Brick slips can be made one of two ways: by sawing off an edge from existing bricks to create ‘real brick slips’, or by wire cutting the extruded clay before firing in the kiln to create ‘preformed brick slips’.
By modifying existing bricks to create real brick slips, you are saving waste and materials but also choosing the more time-consuming process that is, ultimately, more expensive but a more bespoke final product. Preformed brick slips are much easier to mass produce and, therefore, cheaper.
HOW ARE BRICK SLIPS INSTALLED?
To install brick slips, there are two main options: individually fitting brick slips onto a backing board, similar to tiling, or buying panel cladding with brick slips that can be cut to your required specifications.
Placing brick slips individually is similar to tiling in that horizontal slats are used to support and align the individual pieces and an adhesive is applied to an area as required. To aid this process further, sometimes the backing board is contoured.
Both of these installation methods are applicable for external brick slips, although the pre-clad panels are often more popular due to the speed and efficiency of installation.
COST
Generally, brick slips are priced at around £1 per piece and you will need the same number of slips as you would brick to cover an area. You should also account for the additional costs of backing board, insulation, adhesive, etc. when pricing things up.
Brick slips can be more expensive than traditional bricks upfront, but you claw back some money with reduced labour costs, less weight and so fewer foundations, as well as convenience.
