Wrought iron gates can be costly, but considering the fact that they last a lifetime, they are often seen as one of the best investments to make if searching for a durable gate.

Maintaining the appearance of your gates and fencing is important from an aesthetic point of view, but also ensures the paintwork and material of the gate are kept intact.

In the latest blog post from Cawarden Brick & Tile Company Limited, we take a look at a tried and tested method for cleaning your wrought iron gates to ensure they remain in tip-top condition.

Step 1

Before you begin cleaning your gates, make sure you brush away any loose dirt or faeces, as well as any spider webs.

Step 2

Fill a bucket with warm soapy water, soak a large sponge and clean your gates from top to bottom. Use a scrubbing brush if there are stubborn marks on the gates. Carry out this method on both sides of the gate before moving on.

Step 3

Rinse the gate with clean water from a hose. If you do not have a hose close to your gates, wash your bucket out and fill with clean water, free of soap. Rinsing your gates with clean water is important as residues from soap may cause discolouration or obvious marks. Once the gates have been thoroughly rinsed, dry them with a towel, then leave them to air dry for several minutes.

Step 4

Now that your gates are clean, you will be able to spot any areas of rust much more easily. Periodic checks of rust are recommended as rust will be easier to treat if caught in the early stages. If you find patches of rust on your gates, use sandpaper to remove these areas, working steadily to ensure all rust is removed.

Step 5

Once all rust is removed from both sides of each gate, wash the gates again, following the previous instructions, dry with towels and leave to air dry.

Step 6

Once your gates are dry, you may begin using a primer that is suitable for iron. It is often recommended to apply two coats of primer, but always follow the instructions on the primer you are using.

Step 7

If you are renewing the paint on your gates, apply two coats of paint that is rust-resistant.
