A GUIDE TO THE STYLES OF CAST IRON RADIATOR

December 19th, 2018

Cast iron radiators are popular for many reasons. They are the best option for those seeking a vintage, charming appearance while still desiring modern radiator performance.

They have much more to offer too, though, so Cawarden Brick & Tile Company Limited run you through the different styles of cast iron radiators in this blog to help you decipher them and choose the one that’s right for you.

ROCOCO

To begin chronologically with the earliest common style of cast iron radiator, Rococo (or ‘Late Baroque’) pieces have their heritage in France in the mid-16th century.

Characteristically, Rococo radiators are ornate, elegant, and opulent with scalloped details at the top, which are perfect for period homes. They can also complement modern and bohemian interiors, starkly contrasting with the former and fitting seamlessly into the vintage feel of the latter.

Most original Rococo cast iron radiators were manufactured in France in the 1890s. Although they may not be as effective as modern radiators at warming your home, purchasing ‘remakes’ can be a better idea. These can be tailored to your requirements and offer some of the highest performance available.

Here’s an example of one of our Rococo radiators.

VICTORIAN

Moving on to a style from about 100 years later than Rococo, Victorian radiators share a similar charm. They are ornate, decorative, and striking, but with fewer details. Victorian radiators feature bolder patterns and simpler silhouettes.

With over 150 years of history behind them, Victorian-style cast iron radiators again fit perfectly into place in homes styled to the period. They can also be paired well with contemporary homes that lean toward vintage decor as they complement this nicely.

EDWARDIAN

Finally, there are Edwardian cast iron radiators, which continue the trend of becoming simpler over the decades. They replicate the style of Edwardian Britain, characterized by clean lines and simplicity, still evident in homes from that era. This, naturally, means they are perfectly at home in many different types of interiors – period, modern, contemporary, vintage, etc.

The benefit of Edwardian radiators is their timeless and classic design, ensuring they remain stylish even if you drastically change your decor.

A STYLE FOR EVERYONE

Even if none of the three options above suit your taste, many other cast iron radiator styles should fit your home and preferences. These are simply the most popular examples and tend to match the widest range of interior styles.
